The AI-Hybrid Filmmaker — commanding the full craft of cinema and the intelligent systems of modern production.
“AI will not replace filmmakers.Filmmakers who understand AI will replace those who do not.”
African filmmakers have been measured against a benchmark built for conditions they cannot access. Not a talent problem — a systems problem. And a systems problem has a systems answer.
The content creator asks the machine to make something. The AI-Hybrid Filmmaker makes something — and commands the machine in service of it. The difference is authorship. And authorship is everything.
Two programs: a concentrated immersion, and a sustained professional certification.
A concentrated experience of the complete pipeline — three days inside a live AI-Hybrid production, seeing the whole method before studying its parts.
The flagship professional program. Full pipeline competency, module by module — from the production problem through to a delivered film.
Most training teaches the pieces and hopes they assemble. The Masterclass begins with the assembled whole — you step directly onto a live AI-Hybrid shoot and contribute to a real short film, so the method makes sense in your hands before it is ever broken down in a classroom.
The film begins before a single frame is captured. Day One is the intelligence layer — building the story, the world, and the characters, then bringing ORAI in as the production brain that holds continuity, references, and intent across everything that follows. You learn to direct the system, not merely prompt it.
Day Two is the visual language. You work through lens psychology — how focal length, depth, and movement shape what an audience feels — then put it into the hands of the tools: the DJI Ronin 4D for capture and the Ignite Digi Control Deck for precision command. Theory and instrument meet in the same afternoon.
Day Three is the work itself. The cohort runs a live AI-Hybrid shoot — every layer of the stack operating together, under real conditions, toward a finished piece. You leave having not just studied the pipeline but stood inside it, with a credit on a film that proves it.
Thirteen named, coded frameworks form the intellectual property of the Academy — each proven through real production.
ORAI is new, but the bar isn’t. Our team’s work already premieres at Sundance, airs on Showmax, and screens across the continent. That is the standard every cohort is trained toward — and the places their films will take next.
You leave with real footage and a credit on a finished production — not just a certificate.
Made to the standard that premieres — the same bar as the team’s Sundance and broadcast work.
Command of the tools and systems end to end — the method, not just the theory.
You join the map — connected to a growing community of African filmmakers building together.
“Hybrid AI is the DNA of filmmaking.
“Ubuntu crosses all boundaries and unites us all Afrikans as one — removing all borders, mental, physical, and spiritual.
“Digital transformation starts with human understanding.

First light — the first print struck from the negative; the light a cinematographer waits for at dawn. FIRST LIGHT is the final stage of the ORAI pipeline: an annual festival where authored African cinema premieres as a numbered Official Selection. The Academy trains authors. This is where the world meets them.
Local roots. Global reach. A minimalist, portable, futuristic open-air theatre for film, culture, technology, and community — inspired by nature, built for Africa, connected to the world.
The entire theatre ships in a single container — screen, canopy, seating, power. One truck reaches any city on the corridor.
Every film ever screened carries a sequential Official Selection number, beginning at #001. The count never resets — the archive is the institution.
Open to every African filmmaker from edition one. The gate is not enrollment — it is ST-02, the Authorship Standard, verified through a Production Bible. Selection here is a certificate of authorship.
March 25, every year, without exception. The festival rotates along the axis we live on — Nairobi · Johannesburg · Freetown · Detroit — and it never skips a year.
No trophy shelf. The winning author’s next short is made on the full ORAI stack, with the Academy’s team behind it.
Step through the evening ↓
One venue, open air. Cohort, alumni, applicants, partners, and press take their seats — forty to a hundred and twenty guests, under festoon lights and a Nairobi night.
Every edition is local in one corridor city — and streamed to the continent and the world. Livestream, virtual screenings, a global community in real time. East. South. West. Connected.
ORAI is built by a team of Emmy Award-winning cinematographers, producers, and engineers with decades of combined experience across two continents. Our work spans a Sundance-premiered feature — To Live and Die and Live, starring Amin Joseph and Omari Hardwick — prestige broadcast including Kings of Joburg S3 and Spinner S2 (Showmax), commercial campaigns for Toyota and Kia, and pioneering AI-hybrid productions such as The Fifth Nomoli, one of the first hybrid-AI films shot in Africa. The method the academy teaches is the method we use, every day, on real sets. This isn’t theory. It’s decades of production experience, engineered into a system the next generation of African filmmakers can build on.
Every application adds a point to this map. ORAI is building a living database of African filmmakers — by craft, by department, by country — so the continent's talent can find each other and build together. The gold hubs mark where ORAI already works; each new filmmaker lights up their own.
The system, the tools, the training. What remains is the work.
